Muthea High School (July, 2015)
Muthea High School is also a mixed day school. But unlike Gitugu, it is just five years old. It too was started by the community to provide affordable education to its children. Muthea is located in Karatina in Nyeri County, about a three-hour drive out of Nairobi.
The school has discipline challenges that manifest in truancy, drug and alcohol abuse, and early pregnancies.
The Career Day at Muthea High School took place on July 4th, 2015 and coincided with the school’s prize-giving day. We spoke to the entire school because the student population is still small (about 150).
“The day had a very positive impact on the students, the teachers and the community. The way you talked to them, coming down to their level, they did not expect that. The connection you gave was very good.
We saw a lot of change, the students kept asking about careers, things they’ve not been asking or thinking about before. But then we had the strike* and the teachers stayed away. Some parents told their kids not to come to school, some of them want their kids to work. Teachers came back to school two weeks before closing and immediately went and started using the laptop and projector you gave us.”
