St Mary’s Mwea Girls High School Career Day
Ramani’s team of volunteers staged a career day at St Mary’s Mwea Girls, Kirinyaga County, on June 20, 2019. Other schools present were: St Mary’s Kagio Boys High School, Good Samaritan Secondary School and Nyaikungu Secondary School. The average performance posted by the schools is a D+. We served about 800 students across Form 3 and Form 4. Volunteers from the AYLF chapter of Catholic University East Africa and others exposed to careers in nursing, law, journalism, communication, political science, Information Technology and education. A key concern for the schools, which was comprehensively addressed by the keynote speakers, was the issue of drug abuse among students, which translates to even lower academic performance and lack of focus. Boniface Ndirangu of EdenHouse Foundation and other recovering addicts shared their personal stories about addiction and challenged the students to remain focused, be conscious about building better futures for themselves and using the resources around them such as their teachers, for guidance in overcoming the challenges they face. Donations from Ramani’s supporters, including the Rotary Club of Embu, allowed us to contribute 150 geometrical sets for math and physics classes, and final national exams. We also donated 120 notebooks for journaling, to help students in their final year to map their futures beyond high school!
